Abstract	A critical question facing the field of business education is: How will secondary level business teachers be prepared for their professional roles? For the past 30 years, the supply of certified business teachers has come from bachelor's degree teacher education programs in primarily public colleges and universities. While that is still the case, the number of institutions that traditionally educate business teachers has steadily decreased. So, at the same time that the demand for certified business educators is increasing, the number of business teacher education programs is decreasing and thus many secondary business programs are being discontinued. Dismally, educational leaders and the policies they must enforce are not providing solutions to the teacher shortage problem. In this article, the authors suggest that business education leaders accept and prepare alternative routes for those seeking to enter the field. One way is through alternative certification/licensure. Alternative licensing matches the needs of individuals who are experiencing job transitions and changes in their work and personal goals. Individuals who choose alternative routes are not like undergraduates who started out wanting to become teachers; instead, they discovered their educational career choices much later in life. (ERIC).
